1°) Could you introduce yourself and tell us about your background?
I'm an artist-designer and the founder of my collectible design brand HAMREI. I was born in the UK and grew up surrounded by different cultures because of my family’s nationalities. British and Brazilian were the strongest, and they continue to echo through my work today - the rhythm of Brasil mixed with the wit of a Brit.
After studying architecture, I went on to have a fairly rapid education in the world of high-end interiors and design. Working with some well-known and established names, I developed a strong eye that ultimately led me to launch my own studio in 2022.
During the last few years, based in Lisbon, I've steadily been growing a solid collection of furniture, lighting and objects, as well as building my reach internationally. My current studio/showroom is definitely a key component in the way the brand has been growing.
Whilst everything has it's time, I create with the intention of lasting. Contemporary today, and still fresh next year, cherished in a decade, part of the family in two, and so on. Longevity as a sophisticated form of sustainability.
2°) Can you explain why you decided to work in Lisbon? How has it changed your approach to your project?
After my first visit, I knew immediately that I was being pulled to live in Lisbon. I could just feel it. Besides the obvious - the people, weather, food, beaches, beauty - it was the closest parallel within Europe to reconnect with my Brazilian roots, so it instantly felt familiar. I also have family in Portugal.
Then there's the production. Whilst some industries have been struggling, there's still a strong furniture industry - both artisanal and industrial. Paired with the country’s geographic location, Lisbon is an ideal place to be based whilst working internationally.
3°) Could you tell us about the project you are working on and what you would like to explore in the coming months?
Every week there's something happening in my studio. As well as new pieces, I'm pretty excited about the launch of my first outdoor collection during Lisbon by Design. We are also working on the brand’s communication, with some pretty cool shoots lined up. And I also enjoy collaborating with galleries and collectors on unique, exclusive commissioned works.
4°) Could you name one Portuguese artist you admire or who has inspired you?
I discovered the work of Helena Almeida through Francisco Fino and it struck a tone that resonates with me.
5°) Can you tell us about one spot in Lisbon that inspires you?
The Calouste-Gulbenkian museum remains one of my favourite buildings and gardens to spend time in. The collection, the programme, the concept, the building and the garden work so well together.
6°) How do you see the evolution of the Lisbon creative community?
We're at an interesting moment where there are a lot of very talented creators in the city. We're just missing the catalyst and the deep desire to bring these minds together and lead to something that could be exceptional and exceptional creatively speaking.
