1°) Could you introduce yourself and tell us about your background?
Hum Studio & Gallery is composed of Bruno Graça (Portuguese) and Carla Radoll (Brazilian/Italian). Before coming to, or rather, coming back to, Lisbon in 2023, we spent ten years in Amsterdam, a city that deeply shaped the way we work, think, and even act. Prior to that, we had experiences in Brussels and Milan, and we completed our studies in graphic design and interior design, respectively.
Our diverse backgrounds inform and influence much of what we do. We truly believe that the plasticity and authenticity of these experiences are tangible in both our aesthetics and our way of working.
2°) Can you explain why you decided to work in Lisbon? How has it changed your approach to your project?
To be completely honest, our move to Lisbon was driven purely by emotion. The closeness to family, the sunny days, and the cultural warmth were the main factors. Lisbon in 2023 is not the same city Bruno left in 2013, and it has become an exciting new chapter for Carla.
We wanted to align our organic, grounded, and honest principles, both personally and professionally, with our surroundings. And that’s exactly what we found: a nurturing soil where we could plant the seed of our studio and gallery.
3°) Could you tell us about the project you are working on and what you would like to explore in the coming months?
Right now, our focus is on keeping our gallery alive; it has been a long-term priority. With our new space in Lisbon, we’re excited to share the beauty we discover along the way and the wonderful artists we collaborate with. Our design studio continues its usual activities at the same pace our clients are accustomed to, but with a clear intention to make the gallery increasingly active. We’re currently working on a very exciting exhibition opening on November 1st.
4°) Could you name one Portuguese artist you admire or who has inspired you?
This is an easy choice for us: Vasco Fragoso Mendes. He was one of the first people we met when we arrived in Lisbon, and he quickly became a close friend. His talent is only surpassed by his kindness and work ethic. We love everything he creates, and we’re lucky to share the same atelier complex, couldn’t ask for a better neighbour.
5°) Can you tell us about one spot in Lisbon that inspires you?
Nature always inspires us. The landscape of the Sintra mountain range and its beaches is a perfect example. But one place we keep returning to is the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, it’s a true gem in the city, with its unique architecture and beautiful gardens.
6°) How do you see the evolution of the Lisbon creative community?
It’s been thriving, skyrocketing, even, since before our arrival in 2023. Initiatives like Lisbon by Design are putting the city on the map and restoring a healthy sense of responsibility to artists and artisans alike. It’s an incredibly exciting time to be here and to witness the growth and potential of local creatives.
