1°) Could you introduce yourself and tell us about your background?
I’m a ceramic artist. I work mainly with handbuilding techniques. My practice moves between two very different worlds. One is all about delicacy, making delicate pieces that play with lightness and precision. The other is more raw and emotional. I create organic sculptures, usually unglazed, because I love the texture and that honest, handmade feel. I often make these pieces while listening to stories — it helps me switch off my thoughts and just let my hands do the work. Those moments are very instinctive, and the sculptures often
carry deep, quiet emotion. I like to call them my “creatures”.
Before focusing on ceramics, I worked as a picture editor at a magazine, then as a creative director for an online marketplace showcasing emerging designers. That led me naturally into interior design projects, which I still take on occasionally alongside my ceramic work.
2°) Can you explain why you decided to work in Lisbon? How has it changed your approach to your project?
I moved from New York to Lisbon. I was ready for a change of pace for my family and myself. I’ve been really inspired by the lifestyle here, the culture, the light, and all the beautiful colors — I’d only taken one ceramic class before coming here, I think Lisbon allowed me to find my creative outlet!
3°) Could you tell us about the project you are working on and what you would like to explore in the coming months?
A mix of sculptures, shells and I designed wooden pedestals that I had made by a Portuguese artisan.
4°) Could you name one Portuguese artist you admire or who has inspired you?
Joana Vasconcelos, she is amazing!
5°) Can you tell us about one spot in Lisbon that inspires you?
The streets of Alfama.
6°) How do you see the evolution of the Lisbon creative community?
I love the design community in Lisbon, people are very generous and kind, there is no feeling of anyone being competitive with one another but more supportive and I think it’ll keep on sparking more collaboration and exciting projects.
