Sam Einstein is a self-taught multidisciplinary artist based in Lisbon for the past decade.

Originally from Los Angeles with Swiss roots, Sam Einstein was drawn to Portugal by surfing and has made it his creative home. Starting with oil painting—ranging from abstracts to cityscapes of Lisbon and LA—Sam later developed a passion for woodworking, crafting custom hardwood frames and eventually founding Espaço Ziggy, a shared art studio and woodshop in Campolide, in early 2024. Recently, Sam has focused on the interplay between light and wood, drawn to the translucent qualities of grain and the design potential it holds. This led to the creation of epoxy-stabilized wood lightboxes that function as both art and ambient lighting—appearing as framed works when off, and radiating a warm, glowing contrast when illuminated. Though woodworking has taken center stage, painting remains a grounding practice. Whether through cityscapes or illuminated sculpture, Sam’s work consistently explores the themes of light, warmth, and contrast.
