Vânia Gonçalves’ ceramics are sculptural objects, through which she tries to explore and transmit fragility, lightness, and movement.

Vania Gonçalves was born in Lisbon in 1978 where she lives and works. She graduated in dentistry, which she practiced for 13 years in London, but soon realized her desire to do something artistic. After attending an experimental ceramics workshop in London, and returning to Portugal, she enrolled in the Ceramics course at Ar.Co. School (Centro de Arte e Comunicação Visual) in Lisbon. She has since set up a studio at home where she works.

Vânia Gonçalves’ ceramics are sculptural objects, through which she tries to explore and transmit fragility, lightness, and movement. In some pieces she uses molds, but in most of them she let's the clay guide itself into a shape. The clay twists and folds freely as it was a piece of fabric, aproaching organics forms inspired by the natural phenomena.

Vania prefers neutral colours, as they are closer to the colour of the material itself, increasing the connection between nature and form.
